African Grey Parrot As a Pet

The African Grey parrot is one of the friendliest and intelligent of the parrot species.
Though it doesn't have the brilliant colors of some of its relatives, it makes up for it in its friendly disposition and acute ability to mimic not only sound but speech.
The African Grey can even wisely put together whole sentences.
This parrot species can trace it's ancestry of being a popular pet all the way back to the Egyptians.
This parrot will grow somewhere between 12-13 inches in total length and as you can gather by its name, will almost totally be gray, some however, will display a little color towards the tail.
These birds will general feed on leafy material, fruits, seeds and nuts.
Harrison's Bird Food is healthy pellet food for a Grey.
The African Grey is a strong bird but they tend to be susceptible to calcium deficiency.
A well thought out diet is necessary, especially if you get one at a very young age.
Remember that dairy products are a big health danger to parrots so the calcium will have to come from an alternate source.
Milk, cheese, yogurt and other common products can make a parrot very sick, even enough to kill them.
These African Grey parrots are very social birds and because of this, they hate to be lonely.
It will have no qualms in letting you know it is bored with its loud squawks.
An easy way to keep this parrot happy is with plenty of love and attention.
When you are not able to be around, plenty of bird toys will also do the trick.
These parrots are normally tranquil and quiet so you will have no trouble knowing when it is bored and considers it play time.
The species of parrot can live to over 50 years old.
They are great birds to own and will form a wonderful relationship with their owners.
The unfortunate part of these birds is that they are such a lovely pet that there has been a development of a black market within the African country where trappers are selling wild birds as tame.
So if you would be interested in owning one of these smart and social birds, please make sure you are getting one from a reputable dealer.
