- To help you get the right trampoline for your family and to make sure you get the best value for your investment, you need to determine who will primarily use the trampoline. Along with checking the weight limit prior to purchase, a safety enclosure should also be purchased. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against children under 6 years of age using trampolines.
- Install trampolines in a relatively open area, far from structures and trees. The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends using safety pads to cover the trampoline's frame, springs and hooks. While safety enclosures can minimize the risks of falling off the trampoline, many trampoline-related injuries happen on the surface; regularly check the trampoline for any worn-out, rusted or broken parts.
- Before kids jump on the trampoline, make sure there are no objects on the bouncing surface and below it. Children should never play on trampolines unsupervised. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported that a significant number of injuries are caused by jumpers colliding; it is safer to use the trampoline one person at a time. When jumping, make sure kids stay in the center and avoid attempting back flips and somersaults without proper supervision and instruction.
- Make sure kids never force others to jump up and down on the trampoline, especially if they are already tired. When they're done for the day on the trampoline, do not let them jump off the trampoline.
