- 1). Plan your location. Make sure the land you intend to build the enclosure upon is raised so flooding doesn't occur. Little chicks can drown easily. Additionally, make certain the coop is facing toward the sun for fast drying after rain. Remember, chickens will be noisy in the morning, so you may want some distance from your home.
- 2). Make solid building plans to ensure that construction is sound and affordable. Consider what natural threats are in your area and how you can protect your chickens from cold weather with insulation. Windows are important to control air flow. Know how many chickens you want versus the size of your pen. Allowing the chickens proper space for exercise and rest will make them happier and healthier.
- 3). Reinforce the coop to make certain carnivore animals don't get in. Place chicken wire around the perimeter to protect the coop. If possible protect a generous area around the coop too because barking dogs will startle the hens. Add a roof to keep wolves and dogs out.
