- 1). Remove all wood products from around the foundation of the house, including firewood, lumber, newspaper, or wooden plant trellises.
- 2). Divert moisture away from the foundation. Add downspouts and splash guards to keep rainwater from soaking the soil close to the house. Grade the soil at the foundation to slope away from the house to remove moisture.
- 3). Seal cracks around foundation with caulk, as well as any place where concrete meets wood surfaces.
- 4). Replace soil around the house foundation with a sand barrier. Termites are unable to dig their tunnels through sand. Sand particles should be 10 to 16 mesh. The barrier should be 20 inches wide, with a depth of 4 inches that feathers out away from the house.
- 5). Add borate chemicals to water as directed on the package. Mix well.
- 6). Spray borate solution onto the wood. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
- 7). Repeat application after heavy rains to keep the borate effective against termites.
- 8). Lay boric acid bait blocks around the foundation.
