- 1). Click on the Windows "Start"menu, then click to open the "PuTTY" folder. Click on "PuTTYgen" to open the PuTTY key generator.
- 2). Click on "File" from the main menu, then click "Load Private Key." Browse to the location of the private key file on your computer, which has a .ppk extension, and click "Open." Type in the passphrase for the private key if prompted.
- 3). Click on the "Conversions" menu, then click "Export OpenSSH Key." Type in the filename for the converted private key file, then click the "Save" button. The converted key is saved in the specified file and displayed in the "Key" box at the top of the PuTTYgen window, ready for use with an OpenSSH server.
