- 1). Select a planting area that receives 70 to 90 percent shade from surrounding trees. Ginseng will not survive in sunny locations.
- 2). Rake away the leaves from the area where you plan to the ginseng seedling. Do not till the soil, which will interfere with the valued "wild" formation of the ginseng roots.
- 3). Dig a hole with the garden trowel just large enough for the roots of the seedling to fit into without crowding. Dig as many holes as you have seedlings, spacing the holes 9 inches apart.
- 4). Insert each ginseng seedling into a hole. Fill in the hole around the root with the soil that had been removed, and pack the soil down firmly with your hands.
- 5). Water the soil around the seedlings until you've made it moist but not soggy.
- 6). Rake the leaves back over the planted area, covering the sprouted seeds. The leaves should cover the ground to a depth of no more than 3 inches.
- 7). Water the seedlings if the ground becomes dry. If you have selected a proper site, the shade from the trees and the leaf mulch should hold enough moisture in the ground to render watering unnecessary.
