The summer isn't only a time for kids to play, it is also a great chance for parents to encourage fun learning activities. Based on the age of the child, parents can provide games and fun activities that help kids to remember and improve math skills over the summer. - Ask young children to help sort laundry before washing. While sorting, encourage the child to count how many of each color item there are. Children can also be asked to guess the weight of household items, and then parents and kids can weigh the items on scales to measure how accurate the guess was. Make a game of counting snack foods while you eat, such as fishie crackers or grapes.
- Use the newspaper to have the child check temperatures across the world. When grocery shopping, parents can ask children to help find the best deals and try to calculate the total costs of the groceries. Use your child's allowance to encourage math skills by having them equally divide the total they have earned into three containers: one labeled Spend, one Save and one Donate.
- Discussing household expenses is a good way to encourage math skills. Parents can make a list of monthly living expenses and have the children estimate each one. Then the estimates and actual costs can be compared to show how accurate they were. Older children can be encouraged by adults to make a budget with allowances. A list can be created for income and a list for expenses. Children can record every desired expense and then calculate the total costs and how much will be left over.
- Parents can ask children to count the number of steps during a walk.
When watching TV, children can look for numbers and costs in the commercials.
Moms and dads can find educational trips to take kids on that can encourage math skills.
Children can use a piggy bank and keep track of all the change saved to add up a total amount.
