Buy, download and install Xilisoft software. This is a software application that converts certain types of media to other types of media. In this case the format of a movie DVD will be converted to Apple TV video MP4.

Click "Open DVD" and insert the DVD you wish to copy to your Apple TV library. The amount of movies and media you can copy to your library will depend on how large the hard drive is on the Apple TV unit.

Select the DVD or the directory where the movie you wish to copy and convert is located. Click "OK." Add to you're the media to the program list by choosing "File" and "Add DVD Folder" or "Add IFO Files". These options can be found by right clicking the menu that is on the program list.

Sort and pick what parts of the DVD you wish to copy. By default the Xilisoft program selects the entire DVD. Select the profile you wish to add to this program by using the drop down menu choices on the program list. Different programs can be assigned different profiles.

Correct any profile properties like resolution, video format, and bit rates in the clicking the "Profile Properties" on the right side of the menu. Set the path for saving your ripped movie. On the main screen you choose "Destination" and choose your location for saving.

Hit "Rip" on the main screen and the conversion will start. Keep up with the progress by looking in the program list area. If you need to stop or pause you can do this in this same menu area. Click "Open" when the program is done with the conversion to add it to your iTunes.

Watch you newly copied movie as you would any other movie that you have downloaded.
