There aren't many plants in this world that naturally need no soil to grow in the wild, but there are a few. These plants are part of a particular group called tillesandia. Each of these plants survive by pulling nutrients and water directly from the air, and because of this need an extremely humid place in order to grow. This is why, in the wild, you only find them in tropical places with dense vegetation, such as the South American rain forest. - The stricta incorporates greenish gray leaves. The flowers are an almost navy color that rest on short mauve stems. The stricta x tenuifolia has purple blooms and pink stems and thin, needle-like leaves. Both plants have short flowers of only a few inches.
- The octopus plant, or caput-medusae, has rose colored stems with blue blooms. The leaves of the plant have thick curls that can reach 10 inches in length. The octopus plant also has small hairs all over it.
- The air flower, or aeranthos, has red stems that produce flowers with indigo blooms on top. More plants develop on the stem and send out flowers of their own. Each flower can reach a height of about 5 inches.
- The magnusiana has a light violet bloom and prefers full sun to partial sun to grow well. The petals of the bloom are small and surrounded by many thin leaves.
- The bergeri needs full sun to grow as well lots of water. It grows in groups with white or purple blooms similar to the iris.
