Do Citrus Trees Need Special Fertilizer?

    Citrus Special Fertilizer

    • Citrus special fertilizer is designed to meet the special needs of citrus trees. It contains the micronutrients iron, boron, magnesium, manganese, copper and zinc as well as the macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

    Application

    • Apply citrus special fertilizer three times a year. The first feeding is in late winter when the buds begin to swell. Apply the next two feedings during a flush of growth in late spring and fall. The usual rate of application is 1 lb. of citrus special fertilizer for each year of the tree's age. Spread the fertilizer evenly over the root zone, which is about twice the diameter of the canopy of the tree. Keep fertilizer away from the trunk of the tree.

    Sandy and Alkaline Soils

    • Sandy soils and soils with a pH above 7.0 prevent citrus trees from absorbing some of the essential micronutrients from the soil. A foliar nutrient spray allows the tree to absorb nutrients through the leaves. Use a spray labeled specifically for citrus trees. Apply it any time of year except during flowering.
