- Your gift should indicate that your recipient is a step closer to teen years.birthday image by Albert Lozano from Fotolia.com
Girls who are 12 are not yet teenagers, but they're close enough that they're not "kids" anymore. This makes it a little tricky when seeking out a gift that they'll enjoy. Unless you have a good grasp of your recipient's personal style, avoid clothes because fads are constantly changing. Focus on finding a productive gift that your tween can use. - Get your recipient a do-it-yourself craft set. Look for activities including lip gloss, handbag, picture frame or jewelry-making kits. You can also get a scrapbook creator and challenge her to fill it before her next birthday. Gifts like these allow her to be creative and make the things she will be using daily.
- As she approaches her teen years, your recipient will become increasingly interested in beauty. Give her a certificate to a nail salon in her area where she can redeem is for a manicure and pedicure. This will make her feel grown up and be a stepping-stone into her teen years.
- Purchase a decorated box (or decorate your own) and fill it with jewelry accessories, hair clips, tiny photo frames, leggings and makeup. These are all useful and she can start taking them and building her own personal style with them. The box may also serve as storage space and she will be able to reuse it.
- Combine a sleeping bag and toiletry case and give a gift that your recipient will make use of every time she spends the night out. Include travel toothpaste, deodorant and hair ties in the toiletry bag to get her started. You may also choose to include a pair of pajamas or house slippers to make the kit more complete.
