Christmas Help for Low Income Families

    Free Toys

    • The Toys for Tots website has a web form you can fill out to request a toy for your child. This foundation was launched in 1947 by Col. William Hendricks and has given children more than 370 million toys.

    Churches

    • Many churches have programs that offer presents and Christmas dinners. This is often the best place to get help.

    The Salvation Army

    • This organization offers many programs to help the community, including clothes, money, toys and food for families in need. Contact a local store to learn about and apply for their programs. Most offer free Christmas dinner baskets.

    Schools

    • Many schools have a list of local resources for parents or even have applications for these programs.

    WIC and Food Stamps

    • If you haven't applied for these programs yet, they can help feed your family and save money for other necessities and gifts for your children. WIC stands for Women, Infants and Children and offers food vouchers for young children and pregnant women. Like other helping programs, they might have additional programs or know of places to get help.

    Clothing

    • You can shop at the Salvation Army, Goodwill and other secondhand stores where you can often find high quality clothing for much less. Also try starting or joining a clothing exchange through the community or your church. Some communities offer a program that buys school clothes for children in the fall. Check with your elementary school and local Salvation Army. This can help you save money for Christmas.
