Fancy a surf? Like to live away from the metropolis? This is the place.
Piha Beach on New Zealand's North Island west coast regularly features on local television usually for a surf champs or a drowning.
One or the other.
Its a wild place, and it has a rip to die for, literally.
We made the road journey from this South Pacific's largest city, Auckland, (incidentally it contains the world's most populated Polynesian peoples too) on a mild autumn sunny Sunday.
Its about 60 minutes west on a winding mountain road passing through the Waitakere Ranges and consequently those that live here tend to be less mainstream.
I imagine the only work is through the two local cafes we found or perhaps a bit of laboring round about.
Mostly though its probably subsistence, a little welfare, some fishing, the vegetable garden and whatever else is going.
There is a New Zealand made television program that follows the trials and tribulations of the local Surf Life Savers.
You see what happens is that come the warmer weather there is a sudden influx of Aucklanders deciding they remember all the skills needed for surfing and hey, I can handle the stuff thrown off this beach, man.
Unfortunately too many find themselves too quickly and uncontrollably heading for the next land mass - which is Australia - 1,200 miles away.
The sirens go up and the Life Savers take to the breakers with their boat often almost vertical as they hurry to the desperate swimmers.
Today was mild.
The sea offered minimal 2 metre waves and just a few ventured out.
The Life Saving Building looked dark and empty but we could make out a couple of pairs of binoculars peering into the foam.
The cafe we chose offered the usual, nothing special at all and a little pricey, but aside from the surf, rock climbing and tramping in the bush I couldn't imagine much else going on especially in Autumn.
Its the kind of place you have to visit if you want to see wild scenery and perhaps have a bit of romanticism about Neil and Tim Finn music - they have a studio nearby in Karekare Beach where they recorded the Together Alone album with Eddie Vedder and others.
I'd suggest making the journey in summer.
However you will be in amongst a few thousand others with the same idea.
