How to Get a Lingering Smell Out of Your House

    • 1). Remove the source of the odor, if you haven’t already. The sooner the source is gone, the sooner the lingering smell will follow.

    • 2). Clean anything the odor may have affected. Vacuum carpets and upholstery and wipe down smooth surfaces with warm water and baking soda. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda into 1 quart of warm water and use it to wipe down counters and walls.

    • 3). Sprinkle baking soda over upholstery, such as carpet and furniture. Fabrics are notorious for holding onto odors. Leave the baking soda for two to three hours before vacuuming it up.

    • 4). Air out your home by opening the windows and doors to let fresh air in. Use fans to help force lingering odors out.

    • 5). Place bowls of baking soda or fresh ground coffee around the house. One bowl per room, depending on how severe the odor is, should work well. Leave the bowls out overnight to absorb lingering odors in the air.
