A small bookshelf that stands 3 to 4 feet off the ground is another option for a cheap TV stand. An old dresser can easily be converted into a TV stand, though it will take a small amount of labor. Once you put your TV on top of the dresser, take out all the drawers and remove the front and back of each drawer. Then slide the drawers back in, creating a place for the electronics. If the open, newly modified face of the dresser looks a little tacky, buy a piece of wood and hinges to create doors.
