Do You Know The Reasons Why People With Addictions Fail To Get Treatment?

Many people struggle with addictions of one kind or another. While some people seek treatment for their addictions, a huge majority feel that they do not need it. Unfortunately, these people wait until it is either too late or very difficult to get the help that they need. Early treatment is very important for anyone who wants to make a quick recovery. Everyone knows that the longer a problem remains, the more difficult it will be to uproot.

According to addiction professionals, there are different reasons why people are resistant to getting treatment. The issues differ from one person to the next and it is more difficult for those who have deep-rooted issues. In most cases, people who say that they do not need treatment for their alcohol or drug problems are actually masking an underlying issue. The fact is that they do know that they need help but they are scared of failing. Following are some reasons why people do not seek treatment.

1.    They are in denial

Many people who say that they do not need treatment for their addiction are actually in denial. The most common initial reaction is denial when the addict claims that they do not have a problem. Many of them argue that they can stop at any time and they refuse to accept that they are addicted. Many of them are usually so deeply entrenched in the habit but in spite of the facts, they deny its existence.

2.    Issues of control

Many addicts find it difficult to admit they have a problem because they have control issues. This is most common among men who think that admitting they have a problem is a sign of weakness. They feel that only they hold the answer to any issues that they may have. These types of people are often controlling and manipulative in their relationships and they see getting treatment as ceding control to someone else. They are likely to say that everything is under control and they do not need treatment.

3.    Fear of the process

It takes a lot of courage and determination to agree to get treatment and unfortunately, many people lack the necessary motivation. Many people agree that accepting that one needs treatment and entering treatment is half the battle won. Many addicts are kept aware by fear and they are wary of everything from the detoxification process to the withdrawal. The fear can be due to past failures or ignorance about the process. Many feel apprehensive about the treatment program and what it entails.

4.    The "comfort" of addiction

Many addicts stick to their habits because of the comfort that it brings them and they are unwilling to let go of the feeling. There are many reasons why people abuse drugs or alcohol and many are addicted to the "high". The thought of giving up this high or being cut off from their supply keeps many people away from treatment in spite of the serious consequences to their health and relationships.

There are other reasons why people keep away from treatment and they include the fear that the treatment will not help, stigma attached to the process or the belief that nobody cares.
