- 1). Measure a shot of vodka into a shot glass. The definition of a shot varies depending on country but a standard shot is usually 1.5 US fl. oz. (44 ml). Most hard liquors and spirits such as vodka contain approximately 40 percent alcohol. The combination of these two figures gives you an idea of a standard hard liquor or spirit. Keep in mind that some hard liquors such as grain alcohol, moonshine and certain rums can have double or even more alcohol per serving.
- 2). Measure 5 US fl. oz. (146 ml) of wine into a wine glass. Most wines contain 10 to 12 percent alcohol. This is a typical serving of wine. The percentage of alcohol in this wine glass is approximately the same as the shot of vodka.
- 3). Measure 12 US fl. oz. (355 ml) of 5 percent alcohol beer into a pint glass. Alcohol content in beer can vary widely, but in this standard example, the amount of alcohol roughly equals that of the other two drinks.
