- 1). Use a utility knife to cut through any paint or caulk that is holding the molding to the wall or baseboard. This will prevent the wall paint from being damaged while you are removing the molding.
- 2). Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall from which the molding is being removed. It is important to pry the molding off where it is attached to the studs whenever possible, to prevent the tool from slipping and creating holes in the wall.
- 3). Use a pry bar or sturdy putty knife to remove molding from the wall. Place a wooden block between the pry bar and the wall to provide leverage and support. This will prevent the molding from splitting and will keep the wall from being damaged.
- 4). Begin removing the molding in any place where there is a stud, and work your way across the molding until it is loosened. Place the pry bar as close as you can to the nails when preparing to pry the molding off. Separate each nail from the molding before trying to pull off the whole piece of molding.
- 5). Pull the handle of the pry bar or putty knife towards you to remove the molding. Do this all the way along the piece of molding and then pull the molding off with your hands once all of the nails are loosened.
