- 1). Open Adobe Photoshop. Select File > Open and navigate to the file you wish to make into a thumbnail.
- 2). Go to File > Save for Web. In the Save for Web window, choose the file type "GIF",which is the most common file used for web images. Leave the rest of the default settings as they are. This will make your image colors optimal for web display.
- 3). Click on the chain icon to keep the image width and height proportional to the original image size. 100 by 100 pixels, about one inch by one inch, is the standard size for square thumbnail images. Type 100 pixels into the width or height box and click "Done." (Note, however, that if your original image is not an exact square, your thumbnail won't be, either. To make it into a square, you'll need to crop it so that the width and height are equal.)
- 4). Select File > Save As. Choose a location for your new file and type in a name. Click "OK" on a PC or "Save" on a Mac.
