How to Change the Setup for Your Internet

    • 1). Purchase a wireless router if you want to go wireless. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your modem and the router. Turn on your router. Use another Ethernet cable to connect the router with any one of your computers. Open your favorite Web browser. Type in your router IP address in the address bar. Use "http://192.168.1.1" for Linksys and Netgear brands. Use "http://192.168.0.1" for D-Link brands. Type the username and password to log in to the router configuration page. Configure your SSID (name of the network), WEP key and password to log in. Follow prompts to complete the installation.

    • 2). Go to a wired connection if you are the only user for your Internet connection. Disconnect the wireless router from the modem. Use an Ethernet cable to connect your modem directly to your computer. Note that the wired connection setup can improve your Internet speed.

    • 3). Change your Internet network password. Navigate back to your router configuration page by following the instructions in Step 1. Change the password to access the wireless connection. Note that you will need your existing password to make the change. You can also change the name of your network connection from the router configuration page.

    • 4). Change the connection setup from your computer. Right-click the network icon at the bottom right corner of your screen and choose "Connect to a network." Scroll down the list of available Internet connections. Right-click your Internet connection and choose "Properties." Click the "Connection" tab. Check "Connect automatically when this network is in range" if you want your computer to auto-connect to the network. Check "Connect to a more preferred network if available" if that's what you want. Click "OK."

    • 5). Change the security setup from your computer. Navigate back to the "Properties" dialog box from Step 4. Click the "Security" tab. Click the "Security type" drop-down menu and choose the appropriate authentication method. Choose the appropriate encryption method. Type your network key. Click "OK."
