How to Clean AC Coils in an Outside Unit

    • 1). Turn off the power to the AC unit. If the AC unit doesn't have its own power switch, turn the power off through the circuit breaker.

    • 2). Remove any leaves or debris from around the outside unit.

    • 3). Remove any screws, and lift the cover off the outside unit according to the manufacturer's instructions. Set the cover aside.

    • 4). Vacuum any debris from between the unit's metal fins with a soft brush attachment. If you accidentally bend the fins out of shape, carefully bend them back after cleaning.

    • 5). Spray the coils with a garden hose to rinse away any leftover debris. Avoid spraying water directly onto the fan at the top of the unit.

    • 6). Replace the AC cover and any screws. Turn the power back on.
