How to Repair Underground Sprinklers

    • 1). Identify the sprinkler that's damaged. Indications of damage include errant water patterns, leaking at the nozzle or a sprinkler that won't pop up.

    • 2). Turn the sprinklers off and turn both ball valves on the sprinkler vacuum breaker 90 degrees to ensure the water doesn't turn on while you're working.

    • 3). Remove the dirt around the base of the sprinkler using a hand shovel. Remove about 6 inches of dirt from around all sides of the sprinkler.

    • 4). Inspect the sprinkler body for signs of damage or cracks. If the body is cracked or otherwise broken, you will have to replace the entire unit. Twist the sprinkler body counterclockwise until it pulls free, and screw in the new sprinkler. If the body is not damaged, continue inspecting for signs of damage.

    • 5). Pull up on the nozzle assembly and twist off the nozzle by turning it counterclockwise. If the nozzle is broken or damaged, it will have to be replaced. Twist off the nozzle by turning it counterclockwise. Place the new nozzle on the supply tube and turn it clockwise until tight.

    • 6). Pull out the small plastic filter from under the nozzle. If the filter is clogged, run it under cold water for 30 seconds and gently tap the filter on a clean surface. Replace the filter in the supply tube and replace the nozzle.

    • 7). Check the base of the sprinkler to make sure it's not leaking. If it is, there will likely be a puddle of water or mud under the sprinkler. If there appears to be a leak, unscrew the sprinkler from the riser below by turning the body counterclockwise. Place a single layer of Teflon tape over the riser threads and replace the sprinkler. The tape will lubricate the threads and ensure a watertight connection.

    • 8). If the nozzle is broken or damaged, it will have to be replaced. Twist off the nozzle by turning it counterclockwise. Place the new nozzle on the supply tube and turn it clockwise until tight.
