- 1). Cut out all but one of the broom branches with a tree trimmer. Make the cuts close to the branch from which they are growing.
- 2). Brush sucker growth inhibitor on the cut ends to help stop them from growing back at a later time.
- 3). Dispose of the cut branches in a plastic bag to help prevent the spread of the elm yellow and subsequent witches broom.
- 4). Cut down an infected tree if you are sure it is the only one, so that the condition doesn't spread to the other elms in the area. This is the best way to protect large groups of elm trees. If cutting down a tree is not possible, rake up falling leaves and branches to keep the spread to a minimum.
