- 1). Wash your jewelry using a soft cloth and a solution of warm water and gentle soap. If your jewelry is made of an inexpensive metal, you may want to avoid water altogether, as it could cause discoloration and rust. In that case, simply polish the metal part of the jewelry with a jewelry cloth.
- 2). Dry your jewelry with a cotton cloth after cleaning. Leaving any jewelry to air dry could cause discoloration or spotting and rusting in the case of inexpensive jewelry.
- 3). Remove your jewelry if you are cleaning with chemicals, using lotions or perfumes, swimming, bathing, cooking and doing laundry. Harsh chemicals can tarnish the most expensive of jewels and would be especially damaging to inexpensive pieces.
- 4). Store the jewelry in a jewelry box or jewelry pouch to protect it from general home particles, such as dust and dirt.
