- 1). Weigh your denim fabric to determine how much dye to use. One pound of fabric needs approximately one box of powder dye or one-half bottle of liquid dye. When using dark colors, double the amount and use two boxes of powder or one bottle of liquid dye for the best results.
- 2). Wash your fabric and leave it damp.
- 3). Fill your bucket with hot water.
- 4). Dissolve the powder dye in a measuring cup with 2 cups of hot water and then add to the bucket. If using liquid dye, shake the bottle vigorously before adding the dye to the bucket. Stir the dye into the water with your stirring stick. Wear rubber gloves when working with dye.
- 5). Add 1 cup of salt to the bucket and stir well.
- 6). Set your timer for 1 hour. Put your fabric in the bucket and swirl it around to saturate completely. Stir the bucket to allow the dye to fully soak into the fabric. Stir constantly and keep the fabric completely submerged for the time recommended on the dye's directions.
- 7). Rinse the fabric once in warm water and then in cold water until the water runs clear of any dye. Machine wash the fabric in warm water with gentle detergent, then rinse with cool water.
