How to Plant Narcissus

    • 1). Find a location that provides plenty of sunlight as well as good drainage. It's important that the spot be well-drained, so narcissus does well in raised beds.

    • 2). Plant narcissus bulbs in fall, anywhere from six to eight weeks before the first hard frost. Generally, the soil should be around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, although this occurs during different months in different climates.

    • 3). Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 to 16 inches and mix in a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost. This will prepare the soil for the bulbs and get some organic matter into the mix.

    • 4). Dig a hole three times deeper than the narcissus bulb is tall and plant the bulb with the pointed end facing upward. Space bulbs about four to six inches apart. Backfill the hole and press down the soil.

    • 5). Water your new narcissus plantings well. The soil should remain moist and be watered whenever it begins to dry out, unless you get enough rain to do the job.
