- 1). Get a swatch of your carpet. Hopefully, you will have pieces leftover from when the carpet was laid. If not, take a well-lighted digital photo of the carpet. The color in the image must be accurate.
- 2). Find a dye that exactly matches the swatch or images. If the color does not match, you will still be left with an odd-looking spot in your carpet. Ask for help from a salesperson if you are having trouble matching the dye to your carpet sample. Blend two colors to achieve a match, if necessary. Find carpet dye at hardware, home improvement and craft stores.
- 3). Vacuum the spot and its surrounding area.
- 4). Apply dye to the spot with an eyedropper. Wear glasses to perform close work, if necessary. Confine the dyeing process to the spot. Apply one to two drops of dye at a time, then work the dye into the spot with a toothbrush. If your spot is very small, you may need only a few drops of dye to color it. Otherwise, keep adding dye and brushing it in until you have covered the entire spot.
- 5). Give the newly dyed carpet spot time to dry. Follow the product instructions as to drying time. Even if you have to cordon off the area for hours, knowing the spot has been effectively re-dyed will be worth the trouble.
