13. November 1994- Three South Africa Concerts In Tribute to Nelson Mandela
After singing at a state dinner at The White House in honor of newly elected South African president Nelson Mandela in October 1994, one month later, Whitney Houston performed three concerts for over 200,000 people in South Africa in tribute to Mandela. Titled Whitney - The Concert for a New South Africa, the first performance was November 8 in Durban followed by a concert November 12 in Johannesburg which was televised on HBO. The final concert was presented November 19 in Cape Town.
Houston was the first entertainer to perform in the newly unified, apartheid free South Africa. She donated proceeds from the concerts to several South African children's charities.
14. November 14, 1995 - "Waiting To Exhale" Film and Soundtrack
On November 14, 1995, the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack was released, and the film opened December 22, 1995. The film starring Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon debuted at number one and earned over $80 million. The soundtrack sold over ten million copies featuring three songs by Houston including the number one single "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)." It won numerous honors including a Grammy for Best RandB Song for "Exhale," and NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Album, Outstanding Soundtrack, Outstanding Song ("Exhale)" and Outstanding Female Artist (Houston).
The all-star album also featured Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, TLC, Faith Evans, Chante Moore, SWV, and Ce Ce Winans.
