Things to Do on a Sunny Day in San Francisco

    Mission Dolores Park

    • Located in the Mission District of San Francisco, the Mission Dolores park is a popular hangout for families, couples, dog walkers, locals and tourists.

The Mission District tends to see more sunshine than much of San Francisco, so this is a great spot for sunbathing. The park also features a tennis court, soccer field, children's playground and dog play area, and it offers views of the San Francisco Bay and hills of the East Bay.

At the northern end of the park is the Mission San Francisco de Asis, or "Mission Dolores"; the oldest intact mission in California---the cemetery of which was used as a location in the Hitchcock film "Vertigo."

    Boat Trip Around the Bay

    • On a sunny day, it can be fun to see San Francisco from the water by taking a boat trip. Boats regularly leave for trips to Alcatraz, Sausalito and around the bay from the crowded Pier 39 at Fisherman's Wharf.

However, visitors looking for a less touristic and more personalized experience should consider chartering their own yacht. Sailing companies such as Captain Kirk's Sailing and San Francisco Sailing Co. offer chartered yacht trips that include crew services and refreshments. Passengers are invited to take an active role in sailing the boats if they wish, or they can just sit back and relax.

    Bike the Golden Gate Bridge

    • Several bicycle companies are located in San Francisco, such as Bay City Bike and Bike and Roll. Prices are comparable between the companies--averaging from $7 to $10 per hour with discounts for multiple and longer rentals.

Cyclists ride on the Golden Gate Bridge's toll-free walkway, which is open 24 hours a day. From the other side of the bridge cyclists can continue on past Sausalito to other areas in Marin County or just ride back across the bridge. An option for exhausted bikers is to catch the Sausalito ferry back to San Francisco instead.

    Relax on the Beach

    • Baker Beach is a long, wide beach that has great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the rocky cliffs of the bay. Baker is located in the Presidio District, on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Due to high waves and strong currents, the water is unsafe for swimming.

A quieter option is Ocean Beach--a five-mile stretch of beach popular with surfers and walkers. However, Ocean's position adjacent to Golden Gate Park and the Richmond District (generally the coldest areas of San Francisco) mean that it can get chilly even on a sunny day.
