How to Remove Mildew From a Limestone Shower

    • 1). Scrub all moldy areas with a sponge soaked in water and mild liquid detergent. Limestone is sensitive to acids and chemicals (since limestone consists of a weak base), so begin with the mildest cleaners possible. If you remove the dirt from the limestone surface, you can eliminate the problem, since cleaning will deprive mildew of its nutrients. Rinse the shower immediately after cleaning.

    • 2). Dry the inside of the shower. In addition to nutrients, mildew and mold require moisture. By eliminating the moisture from the limestone shower walls, you can further kill off any remaining mold spores that contribute to mildew growth. You can remove surface moisture with towels, but to dry the room more thoroughly, increase the air circulation by opening a bathroom window (if your bathroom has a window) or turning on some fans. A ceiling exhaust fan will also work.

    • 3). Scrub the shower wall with a pH neutral cleaner if any dirt or mildew remains. In some cases, your walls may have layers of caked-on dirt or soap scum that mild detergent alone will not remedy. A pH neutral liquid cleaner (sold in home supply stores) can help you with more difficult cleaning jobs, and since it has a neutral pH balance, it will not harm your limestone surface. Rinse off the cleaner and dry the shower again.

    • 4). Wipe down your shower walls after each use. This will prevent mildew from developing again on the limestone. Clean your limestone shower regularly to prevent dirt accumulation, which will also prevent mildew from forming. After showering, open a window or turn on a fan to accelerate air circulation and remove the condensation from the shower.
