- 1). Vacuum the soot from the walls, carpet, floors, ceiling, furniture and all other surfaces using the highest suction setting. Use an attachment and hold the brush over the surface to be cleaned without touching it. This will prevent the soot from being smeared into the surface.
- 2). Cover the carpeted floors, clothing and furniture with a protective drop cloth or old sheets to prevent from tracking any loose soot through the house before the job is completed. Now that the soot is removed from the fabric in the house, you are ready to deodorize it. Washable clothing may need to be washed multiple times.
- 3). Use a brush attachment with a very light touch to loosen the remainder of the soot on hard surfaces like the walls and ceilings. Be careful not to press against the surface being cleaned or the soot can smear into the paint and be harder to remove.
- 4). Mix 1 tbsp. of trisodium phosphate with 1 gallon of water. Take safety precautions when working with TSP by wearing goggles and gloves. Use chemical sponges to clean painted walls with TSP. Be sure to keep windows open for ventilation.
