Once in a while I will have a client ask me about hair loss due to stress.
I tell them jokingly,"Do not stress about it or more hair will fall out!" I think back to a story about this lady that was balding.
She kept a positive attitude and did not worry about her hair falling out.
One day she woke up and noticed she had three strands left on top of her head.
She thought, "Awesome, I'll wear a braid today".
The next day she woke up and looked in the mirror and she had only two strands left.
She thought, "Great, I can wear pigtails!".
The day after that she woke up to find one strand left and said, "Wow! I can wear a ponytail today!" The next day, she found that all her hair was gone.
She happily thought, "Whew, I don't have to do my hair today!".
This silly story puts things in perspective.
It helps you to be grateful that you still have hair to work with.
Finding the cause of the thinning is where I start with my clients.
Usually, the thinning may be caused by problems other than anxiety.
Explore other causes before you consider it to be hair loss due to stress.
To put alopecia (technical term for balding) in perspective, usually you shed an average of 100-150 strands a day.
You could be losing more than that if there are clumps of hair in the shower or your brush on a daily basis.
Hormones are one of the leading causes of thinning.
Postpartum alopecia and thyroid issues contribute heavily to thinning.
Genetics also play a role in balding.
Other causes could be a poor diet, or medication you may be taking.
Once you have considered these other issues and they do not fit your situation, move on to your stress level.
Hair loss due to stress is a real thing, but it is a mild form of thinning.
Usually, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep, and chronic anxiety is the root cause of hair loss due to stress.
Your best plan action would be to try relaxation techniques like breathing, meditation, and massage.
Make sure your body is getting a balance of nutritious foods and vitamins.
Rest, rest, and sleep.
Set up a bedtime and wake time routine to provide adequate sleep to replenish your body.
Take time for yourself and also relax with friends and family.
