- 1). Use a sharp object to scrape up the coal tar from the surface you want to remove it from. Be careful not to damage the fabric.
- 2). Dab the area gently with a cloth to soak up any of the coal tar that you can from the surface.
- 3). Add a dry cleaning solvent to a new cloth and use this solvent to remove more of the coal tar. If you're removing the coal tar from upholstery you may need to blot it with dry cleaning solvent for a longer period of time.
- 4). Blot a coal tar stain on carpeting with a solution of two cups water, one tablespoon dish washing liquid and one tablespoon vinegar. Rinse with cold water once the coal tar is removed.
- 5). Pre-treat fabrics with stain remover and rub in a liquid enzyme laundry detergent. Wash in very hot water and air dry.
