Video Transcript

Hi, I'm Stephen Marinaro, TheSalonGuy. Twenty-year hairstylist and celebrity media and beauty correspondent. And today, I'm going to show you guys how to trim your beard with scissors. So, when trimming your beard with scissors, you need two essential tools. A comb with wide teeth and a pair of shears. Now, you might not have a pair of professional shears. But whatever you're using, just make sure it's sharp. So, now I'm going to show you guys how to actually go about trimming your beard. So, when you're ready to start cutting your beard, what you want to do is, start with the wide teeth of the comb. Now, you want to comb the hair on your face downwards, which is going to go with the direction of how it's growing. Sometimes beard, they have spaces in them. So, you just want to make sure that when you comb it down, it's all laying flat on your face.then, what you do is, with the wide teeth, you want to come in and start at the bottom, where I like to go. And depending on how close you want the beard, the closer you hold the comb to your face, the shorter the hair's going to be. And the further out from your face, the longer its going to be. So, I would suggest kind of going in the middle, so you're not cutting it too short. So, what you want to do, is lock this in, find your established length. And then, with your shears, using just the thumb on a motion like this. You want to start cutting in and working your way up and you want to do a continuous motion. Because that is going to allow you have a smoother, more even type of a beard. If you do short chops, you might end up taking a risk of cutting too much off. So, once you start to work your way up from your neck, all the way up to around your side burn area on a continuing motion like so. You're just going to kind of follow the pattern of how your beard grows. And that's going to help give you a pretty even type movement. So, when you get to around this area, sometimes you have to comb it down because of the way the hair grows, and some of these hairs like to sneak out. And you do little trims like this. Then, working up, you want to follow the contour of your beard and again, movement with your thumb only and keep the thumb moving quickly. Because that's going to keep more of an even type cut. And you're just going to simply follow the contour of your face shape. Now, the same thing on the other side. Using the wide teeth, comb it straight down, then you're going to go against it. Again, taking your thumb and movements like so, just moving your thumb which is going to create even movements. And keep it moving, you don't want to stop. And if you hold the comb in a way where it's not too close. Then, it's going to guarantee you're not cutting it too sort. Then, after you're done, comb it all straight down. And if you see a couple of hairs that are sticking out, just go with the shear and use your thumb and lightly trim them off. Just don't go too close because you'll end up cutting way too much and you might get spaces or gaps. So, after you're done, comb it, say, hey, I look pretty good and then, you;re good to go.
