- Conjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, staph or strep germs from rubbing the eyes with dirty hands, wash clothes, towels or bed linen. It can also be caused by viral infections associated with colds, sore throats, measles and the same kind of bacteria that causes chlamydia and gonorrhea. Foreign objects like contact lenses, old cosmetics, allergies, and extreme eye strain are some other causes of pink eye.
- When a person has conjunctivitis, his eyes are red, and watery. They are sensitive to light, and feel dry , gritty, scratchy and itchy. They sometimes have a sticky , crusty, discharge that often causes the eyelashes and the eyelids to stick together while they sleep.
- Boric acid is one of many home remedies that are used to help get rid of pink eye. Boric acid is a weak acid with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a chemical compound composed of boron, hydrogen and oxygen. It can be bought as a colorless crystal or a white powder and dissolved in water.
- Use good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently and use clean wash cloths and towels. Do not share linens with other people because this will spread the eye infection. Use cotton balls and wash your eye with the boric acid solution for three or four days. It will clean and soothe your eye, and the antiseptic should get rid of the infection.
- The uncomfortable symptoms should subside in three or four days. If the infection is not cured after using the boric acid solution for three or four days, seek medical help.
