How to Make Your Own Wooden Chalkboard

    • 1). Buy a suitably sized piece of wood from a hardware store. The hardware store will be able to cut down the piece of wood to the correct size for you. Plywood or fibreboard are suitable for choices. Alternatively, buy a picture frame and use the wooden backing sheet as the blackboard with the glass removed.

    • 2). Lay out a tarpaulin or dust sheet on the floor in a well-ventilated area and place the wood on top of it with the side to be painted facing up.

    • 3). Cover the bare wood in a layer of wood primer so the blackboard paint will take better. This can be in liquid or in aerosol form.

    • 4). Apply the blackboard paint using a paintbrush, making sure all the brush strokes go in the same direction. Blackboard paint also comes in aerosol form and can be sprayed on. Allow the paint to dry overnight or according to the manufacturer's guidelines.

    • 5). Paint on a second coat of blackboard paint in the same way to ensure complete coverage. A third coat may also be required if using aerosol paint. If the wooden sheet is being applied to the wall without a frame, make sure the edges of the board are covered to get a professional-looking finish.

    • 6). Wipe the blackboard clean of any chalk dust with a damp cloth on a regular basis. When the board starts to look shabby, take it down and add a new coat of paint.
