- 1). Plan where you want the dryer vent to come out. Only run the dryer vent through the roof if there is no other place for it. The upward angle will make it easier for lint to get trapped in the duct. Measure the distance from the dryer to the edge of the house. Run up to the roof and measure the same distance inward. Drill a small hole into the roof and place a small hanger or other thin object through the hole and into the attic.
- 2). Go into the attic and see where the hanger is poking through. Stick another hanger or other sharp object through the attic and down through the ceiling of the room where the dryer is located. If you have measured properly, the hole should sit 4 to 5 inches from the wall where the dryer is placed. If not, adjust.
- 3). Measure a small hole into the ceiling as wide as the dryer duct vent. Usually this is 4 1/2 inches wide. Use the bi-metal hole saw to create a perfect circle that will cut through any obstructions. Make sure there are no delicate wires or beams in the way of the hole. Go up to the roof and cut the same size hole into the roof.
- 4). Install the dryer vent. Install the duct through the holes first, then attach pieces below and above the duct inside the holes using the duct clamps. Clamp the vent to the wall with brackets and screws.
- 5). Attach the roof vent cap to the duct sticking out of the roof. Use the screws that come with the vent cap. Use a caulk gun and caulk to seal all around the edges of the vent cap where it attaches to the roof. Allow to dry. If desired, go into the attic and attach a sealant on the inside as well. Seal the dryer vent inside where it reaches up through the ceiling.
