How to Rebuild a Coleman Lantern

    • 1). Open the fuel cap to release built up pressure. Do this slowly so the pressure releases at a normal rate. Remove any reserved fuel from the lantern. Clean the lantern of debris.

    • 2). Unscrew the nut and remove the bolt holding the glass housing over the mantle. Remove the glass from the lantern. Clean the lantern's glass and set it aside. Use household glass cleaner to clean up the lantern's glass.

    • 3). Scrape off excess rust or corrosion from the burner, mantles or exterior. Rust can hide breaks in the metal. To remove any rust, use a small amount of spray lubricant on a piece of No. 9 sandpaper and sand rust or corrosion spots.

    • 4). Remove the mantle and any debris around it. Look for the lantern's serial number to obtain the correct mantel for the lantern. Obtain a mantle, from camping supply sections of a local retail store.

    • 5). Replace the new mantle. The mantel of the lantern slides right into the place where the old one was.

    • 6). Check and replace broken fuel-intake hoses. Aged hoses break down and harden over time. It is best to replace hoses instead of risking fuel leaks and potential fires. When replacing the hoses, use a small amount of spray lubricant to clean up rusted areas. Attach the replacement hoses to the lantern, according to the instructions included with the hose replacement.

    • 7). Purchase a replacement generator. Older generators are not worth the effort to refurbish. Attach the new generator to the new fuel valves and hoses. Attach the nut on the generator prior to placing it into place.

    • 8). Replace the glass cover. Secure the cover with the nut and bolt. Refill the fuel tank, light the lantern to check for working order.
