Do Houseplants Help with Pet Dander?

    Pet Dander

    • Pet dander is a protein-based allergen. Animals shed dander when they lose skin cells and fur through normal shedding. Their urine and saliva also contains a small amount of dander. Lightweight and sticky, you cannot see dander, but it can cling to carpets, bedding and even to bare walls. When a person with pet allergies is exposed to dander, he can experience allergic reactions, including an itchy skin rash, watery eyes and difficulty breathing. Dander can trigger allergic reactions months after it is shed.

    Houseplants

    • Houseplants can improve the overall health of your home. They act as air cleaners, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They can also help improve your mood because of their bright green leaves and colorful flowers. Unfortunately, they cannot help with pet dander inside your home; they cannot clean it away. A plant might help in a small way to improve the air quality in your home, but if pet dander sticks to its leaves, it could also trigger a reaction in a person with allergies.

    Solutions

    • To control pet dander in your home, start with your pets. Wash them weekly, using moisturizing shampoo to prevent skin dryness and dandruff. Brush pets daily outside, disposing of all fur outdoors. If possible, remove carpeting and upholstered furniture from your home. Wash walls and tile or wooden floors regularly to remove the dander clinging to them. A person with allergies should not be in charge of grooming or feeding pets, or cleaning out a litter box.

    Considerations

    • Pills and shots are available to treat and control allergies to pet dander. Some breeds of dogs, like poodles, release fewer allergens and can be easier for sensitive people to live with. Getting rid of pets is the only way to eliminate dander from your home. If that isn't an option, concentrate on keeping pets out of bedrooms. This cuts down on dander accumulating in a room where people spend a lot of time, as well as keeping it out of clothing and bedding.
