- 1). Select a pot that is appropriate for a geranium. Geraniums should be placed in containers that are 8 to 12 inches in diameter, to allow an adequate root system to develop. The pots can be clay or plastic and should have drain holes. If your pot rests on a saucer, empty its contents immediately after watering the geranium, to prevent your plant from sitting in water. Sitting in water can cause root rot.
- 2). Mix equal parts soil, sand and peat moss and place it in the geranium container. This type of mix provides adequate drainage and nutrition for the geranium.
- 3). Add fertilizer to the soil every few months. If your geraniums grow indoors, you only need to add fertilizer during growing periods. Use a water-soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer at the rate of 1 tsp per gallon of water.
- 4). Water the soil when it feels dry or hard to the touch. Avoid watering if the soil feels wet or moist.
