- 1). Put on eye protection, rubber gloves and a dust mask. Wear old clothes you can throw away or clothes you can wash immediately after you remove the basement mold.
- 2). Open basement windows and doors if possible, or use fans for ventilation while you clean basement mold.
- 3). Throw away mold-covered items made of porous materials, such as ceiling tiles, carpeting, paper and drywall. You may be able to get certain items professionally cleaned, if you cannot part with a keepsake.
- 4). Fill a bucket with hot water, and add an ammonia-free detergent. Wash all nonporous materials (plastic, metal, glass) and hard surface items (counters, floors). Use old rags and a scrub brush to clean off all visible mold found in the basement.
- 5). Disinfect nonporous areas with a bleach solution. Add 1/4 cup of bleach for each gallon of water. Increase the bleach to 1 1/2 cups for use on concrete or wood surfaces that cannot be thoroughly cleaned with detergent.
- 6). Leave the bleach solution on for at least 15 minutes, then rinse the area thoroughly with water. Immediately dry these areas with rags, or use fans to quickly remove any remaining moisture.
- 7). Dispose of the rags and clothes in a large plastic bag.
