- 1). Separate the sections of your flute. Flutes are built to come apart into three pieces for easier cleaning.
- 2). Thread a handkerchief halfway through the eye of your flute's cleaning rod.
- 3). Push the cleaning rod and handkerchief into or through each flute section several times. This action will clean out any liquid saliva still present in the flute.
- 4). Put rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and begin scrubbing the inside of your flute section by section.
- 5). When your first cotton swab becomes soiled, put rubbing alcohol on another and continue cleaning the inside of your flute until all saliva buildup is removed.
- 6). Clean the inside of your used flute's mouthpiece hole with cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol.
- 7). Clean around your flute's mouthpiece and joints (the places where the flute fits together) using cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol.
- 8). Care for your flute's outside finish by rubbing it with a silver polishing cloth or a second handkerchief to get rid of fingerprints and any smudges.
