Troubleshooting a General Electric Washer

    The Washer Does Nothing

    • If you experience a dead washer, power may not be running to the unit. First check the power cord to make sure it is connected to the washer properly and is also plugged into the wall. Then check your circuit breaker to make sure that the switch is not tripped and that you do not have a blown fuse.

Also make sure the lid switch is functional and not defective. Sometimes the switch needs to be replaced because it may have been damaged during delivery. A quick tip for checking the switch is to take a magnet and place it on the plastic pad beneath the lid. This check is only good if you have a washing machine lid lock with a magnetic sensor, causing the magnetic lid closure sensor to activate or deactivate the solenoid. The magnet will bypass the sensor and engage the hook.

    Water and Drainage Problems

    • If the washer is backing up and not draining, you might have a clogged drain. First check the pump and then the drain hose. If the drain is not obstructed, then a problematic water pump could be the issue. Sometimes a broken impeller or frozen pulley can necessitate the need to replace the water pump. Also, if it is a belt driven washer, check the belt for cracked or worn rubber.

If the washer is filling and draining at the same time, then the drain hose may be too low to allow proper movement of expelled water. A common height for the hose is three feet above the floor.

If no hot water or cold water will run, make sure the valves are turned on. You can feel the pressure on the pipe expand the metal. Normally you will hear or feel the change in pressure. If there is no water at all, then first make sure water is getting to the washer and not escaping through a disconnected hose--either to the washer or to the wall pipe. If everything is secure, then the water inlet valve could be defective and needs to be checked.

    Other Problems

    • If the washer starts to agitate immediately when the cover is closed and does not spin, the timer may need to be replaced. If this is the case, the washer will not be able to move between time and function changes.

If the washer will not stop filling with water, then the control valve assembly is problematic or broken.

If the spin cycle rocks the machine, then the drum straps are broken.
