- 1). Choose a prototype for your mold, such as a button or paperweight. Wash your hands and your prototype thoroughly with soap and water.
- 2). Lay your prototype on a food-safe surface, such as a baking sheet, which should be freshly washed as well.
- 3). Remove the two tubes of putty from your putty kit and place them next to the prototype. These two tubes contain two different colored putties that, when mixed together, chemically react to form a rubbery silicone shell.
- 4). Squeeze two equal-size lumps of putty from each tube, enough to cover your prototype. Combine the two lumps and knead them together until the mixture is a uniform color without any streaks.
- 5). Place the blob of putty on the highest point of your prototype. Using your fingers, drag the putty down over the prototype so the putty forms a shell over it. Press the putty into any areas of fine detail. Work very quickly, as the putty will begin to set up in just a few minutes.
- 6). Wait 5 to 20 minutes for the putty to set. You can test it occasionally by pinching part of it. If it springs back into its original shape, it has set. Remove the mold from your prototype. You can now use your mold with food. For baking, apply the mold before putting food in the oven, and then remove the mold. Never put your mold in the oven. It cannot take extreme heat.
