- 1). Use a plain muffin tray to form the wax. For a more decorative touch, you can also use specially shaped silicone baking molds for this step. Grease the tray you will be using with a small quantity of olive oil. Use a small cooking brush to make sure the trays are completely coated---this will make it easier for you to pop out the finished candles.
- 2). Prepare your wicks by cutting them to the appropriate length. The length of the wick depends on how deep you plan to make your candles. Generally, floating candles are only 1- to 1 ½-inches deep. Add an extra inch to the height, so the wick will stick out of the candle. You can trim it to the appropriate size once the candle is made.
- 3). Melt the candle wax and a colored dye, if desired, on a double boiler on the stove. For added aroma, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the mixture.
- 4). Allow the wax to melt into a liquid, and then carefully pour it into your prepared trays. Do not fill the muffin holders completely with wax. For best results, you want the candles to be about 1 inch in depth.
- 5). Allow the wax to cool slightly, and then insert a wick into the center of each candle. Set the trays aside to cool completely. You can place them in the refrigerator or freezer to speed cooling.
- 6). Remove the candles from the tray---they should slip right out thanks to the olive oil---and trim the wicks to the appropriate length, if they are too long.
- 7). Fill a decorative bowl with water. Place the candles gently onto the top of the water. The wax will naturally float.
