- 1). Lay out your different types of metal nails.
- 2). Bring the magnet close to the iron or iron alloy nails. You will notice that these nails readily stick to the magnet.
- 3). Separate the iron nails from the magnet and try to pick up the nickel or nickel alloy nails with it. You should notice that the magnet attracts these nails easily, too.
- 4). Clear the magnet again. Try to pick up the copper nail with it. You should see that there is little to no attraction between the copper nail and the magnet. This is because copper's electronic properties are such that it turns out not to be strongly magnetic.
