Most of the people face this problem in their home garden and cannot understand the reason behind this. Many good quality fruit trees sometimes fail to bear fruits and it seems that you have to wait till eternity to taste the fruit of your own garden.
There can be many factors that can make the trees behave in this manner. The most important one is pollination. Most of the healthy trees start bearing fruit as soon as they are old enough to blossom. The more flowers it produces, the more fruits it can bear. However, adequate pollination is extremely essential for the trees to bear fruits. If your trees are not producing adequate amount of fruit then this could be one of the reasons. Bees, wasps and many different kinds of insects help in pollination but cold weather and sudden fluctuations in the temperature can result in reduced pollination.
There are many ‘self-unfruitful' trees also that bear perfect flowers but cannot produce fruit from their own pollen. Such trees require pollen from another variety of the same species. Most of the Apple varieties, Plum, Citrus, Peaches and Sweet Cherries are ‘self unfruitful'. To make sure that these trees bear fruits, it is important to plant at least two different varieties near each other. This will ensure that the trees get adequate pollination.
The tree blossoms can sometimes get seriously damaged by frost. If you are expecting heavy frost in the season then it is recommended to cover the trees with a protective cover so that the blossom injury and damage can be minimized.
Avoid planting your fruit trees in partial shade or any other place where they can get overshadowed by other tall trees or buildings. They should be grown in full sun for maximum fruit production. Control weeds from the very initial stages so that they do not compete with your young fruit trees for essential nutrients. Regular pruning also enhances the performance of trees. It is advisable to prune them when they are young so that develop strong roots and healthy framework. Healthy and strong trees will bear better fruit so always go in for good quality fruit trees for your home garden.
