- USB drives include external hard drives, as well as external CD and DVD burners that connect to one of your computer’s available USB ports. Your computer automatically detects the USB drive and loads the appropriate device driver. Norton Ghost then detects the drive and starts the copying process to the device. If using a flash drive with Norton Ghost, make sure it contains enough free space to accommodate the image of your hard drive; otherwise the application presents an "out of disk space" error.
- Norton Ghost does not work with USB-based Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) cards. The program cannot detect this type of connection even if your computer sees the drive. Norton may or may not detect a USB drive connected to your computer using a USB hub or a hard drive connected to another device's extra USB port, which is then connected to your computer. If you experience problems with the program recognizing your device through a USB hub or other device, disconnect the drive and connect it directly to your computer.
- Norton Ghost is compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 drivers and ports. If your computer has one or more devices that are not 2.0 compatible, Norton Ghost loads and uses USB 1.1 drivers to avoid a conflict between devices. If you experience problems with the program not detecting your USB drive, immediately disconnect the non-2.0 compatible device or devices.
- Disconnect any other USB devices if you receive an error from Norton Ghost stating that your USB drive has been disabled. The program is only able to access one USB device at a time and additional devices confuse it. All USB ports must be activated in your Basic Input-Output System (BIOS) settings. If you continue to experience problems with Norton Ghost not detecting your USB drive, consult your computer’s manual on steps for changing the BIOS settings and enabling all USB ports.
