Our modern world offers a wide range of choices when it comes to skincare solutions. These cosmetic procedures depend on the efficacy of the procedure itself and the skill of the practitioner. Facials and other forms of natural skincare have the least side effects but other performed by dermatologist can have a host of possible side effects.
The last 2 sentence are not opinion but something that I have observed in over 15 years as an esthetician.
Here are 3 of the most popular anti-aging procedures performed by dermatologist and their possible side effects.
Intense Pulse Light or IPL
Though it's been around for years, Intense Pulsed Light or Photo Rejuvenation therapy is still a popular recourse for dermatologists. This is consider noninvasive and relatively painless treatment but that depends on your pain threshold of course.
It involves shining a range of light frequencies on the face to eliminate redness, reduce brown spots, and minimize fine lines. You should see results after three or so sessions.
Possible side effects are: Redness, swelling, light bruising, itching, peeling and scabbing and hyper-pigmentation. Not recommended for people with darker skin color.
My solution for this is LED light therapy. It has the same benefits over a longer period of time but no known side effects. LED spa treatments are an excellent way to firm the skin, reverse sun damage, improve skin texture, reduce pore size and keep the skin healthy and young.
Fillers And Injectables
The most common in-office solution for diminishing fine lines and wrinkles is Botox and injectables. Fillers like Belotaro --a hyaluronic acid popular in Europe-- is used to plump up the skin in order to give it volume and a more youthful look.
These products are injected into the skin by a certified licensed medical professional to prevent wrinkles from forming or to lift and plump the skin. The results are immediate and can last from 3 to 6 months.
The possible side effects of botox can be muscle atrophy which can cause major sagging if not maintained.
And with Injectables, when overly done will instead of balancing facial features, distorts them. Aging the person or overly inflating their complexion.
The perfect and natural skincare solution for preventing fine lines and wrinkles are microcurrent facials. This type of facial if expertly done, can over time, take years of a person's complexion. This type of facial lifts and firms your skin and defines the jaw line for a more youthful complexion.
Retinoids
Dermatologist sometimes prescribe products containing vitamin A-derived retinoids. Originally developed as acne treatments, they also help reduce creases by exfoliating the top layer of skin and stimulating collagen production in the layers below.
Some possible side effects are burning, redness, itching, peeling and scaling that starts after two to three days and can last up to three months during use.
High-dose topical retinoids may also cause thinning skin over time. Use products with known cell turnover accelerators in order to give your skin new life and vibrancy.
Collagen and elastin are two vital proteins needed for your skin to remain youthful and vibrant. This is one of the main tricks I use in order to understand anti-aging skincare treatments. Most are trying to do just that but in some cases too aggressively.
There are some natural ways to achieve beautiful and youthful skin over time but you need a little patience and some time.
