Mold and Dirt in the Crawl Space

    Cause

    • Dirt crawl spaces are much damper than concrete crawl spaces. Organic material in the dirt and poor circulation in the space give mold an ideal environment to thrive. This can lead to mold spreading into the lower levels of your home. If a member of your household is sensitive to mold, she could experience eye, skin and respiratory irritation.

    Solution

    • Use a cup of bleach in a gallon of water to clean mold off any part of your home. Spray the bleach solution onto the dirt in the crawl space. After the dirt has dried, place a thick layer of plastic over the dirt floor of the crawl space. This will trap moisture and any mold beneath the plastic and away from your home.

    Considerations

    • Add a layer of pea gravel on top of the plastic to help anchor it and provide another layer of protection between your home and the dampness of the dirt. For extremely moist crawl spaces, install a crawl space humidifier to help keep moisture levels down and prevent a return of mold growth.
